The Blood Flower

An Aboriginal legend depicts the tragic ending for two lovers and their family, as a vengeful husband carries out his wrath and kills them all in a hateful attack, the blood of the family mingles into one stream. When he returns to remember his victory a year later, he finds no bones, but a river of bright red flowers, spread all over the area of the massacre.

The Indiginous name in some parts is Marlu Kuru, which means Kangaroo Eyes. On November 23, 1961, Marlu Kuru or Sturt's Desert Pea, was officially nominated South Australia's floral emblem.

To commemorate this anniversary we have completed a project on this amazing flower, over two seasons we have travelled outback South Australia, to Roxby Downs, Oodnadatta and Coober Pedy, hearing the stories of local enthusiasts and searching for mutant varieties.
